First Conversation with My Son at Navy Bootcamp
A Moment of Pride and Connection With My First Conversation with My Son at Navy Bootcamp
Yesterday, around 3 p.m., I received an unexpected yet eagerly awaited call from my son at the US Navy Bootcamp in Great Lakes, IL. It was our first real conversation since he began his journey of becoming a sailor, and I couldn’t have been prouder. Even though it only lasted five minutes, it felt like a lifetime’s worth of words were exchanged.
He spoke about the intensity of the experience so far—the way the RDCs (Recruit Division Commanders) are constantly in their faces, yelling and pushing them beyond their limits. But I could hear it in his voice: he wasn’t just enduring it; he was embracing it. Every scream, every stern command, every correction—it was all part of the training, part of breaking old habits and forging new, stronger ones. It’s not just about physical endurance but mental strength, too. He told me how the RDCs’ goal is to strip away the old and rebuild you into a great sailor, prepared for whatever comes next.
I could sense his resolve, his determination to listen, learn, and grow from every challenge they throw his way. He was strong, resilient, and determined to rise to the occasion, no matter how demanding it gets. Hearing that in his voice filled me with a sense of pride that’s hard to put into words.
Before the call ended, he shared his address with me so I can start writing him letters. I’ve already started drafting my first one. There’s so much I want to say—how proud I am, how much I believe in him, and how these challenging weeks will mold him into the person he’s destined to become. I know each letter will serve as a reminder that his family is cheering him on, every step of the way.
I’m incredibly proud of his decision to join the Navy, taking control of his future and laying the groundwork for a meaningful life. This call, brief as it was, reminded me of the incredible strength he possesses and the courageous journey he’s on. It’s the start of something truly great, and I can’t wait to see the person he becomes.
