The Little Things You Miss When Your Child Leaves for Navy Boot Camp
The Little Things You Miss When Your Youngest Leaves Home
It’s the small, everyday moments that linger the longest once your children leave the nest. Since my youngest son left for Navy boot camp, I’ve found myself missing the simplest of routines, like his Tuesday morning ritual of gathering the trash throughout the house and rolling the can down to the street. It was a quiet task, one that didn’t stand out much in the hustle of life. Yet now, in the absence of that familiar sound, I realize how those little actions were woven into the fabric of our home.
There’s something bittersweet about missing the ordinary. You don’t fully appreciate how much these routines matter until they’re gone. My son’s journey to Navy boot camp has me proud beyond words, but I can’t help but smile at the thought of him wishing he were back home, taking out the trash, instead of enduring the challenges of boot camp life. It’s funny how both of us, in different ways, long for those simple tasks that once seemed insignificant.
Life moves forward, and our children grow into their own lives and responsibilities. But I’ll always cherish the little things that once made our home feel full—and eagerly look forward to the day he comes home, maybe even happy to take out the trash again.
