First Phone Call from Navy Boot Camp A Proud Moment for a Father
My Son’s First Phone Call from Navy Boot Camp: A Moment of Pride
It was 2 a.m. on Friday morning when my phone rang. Groggily, I glanced at the screen and saw it was my son. My heart skipped a beat as I answered, knowing this would be his first call from Navy boot camp. The moment I heard his voice, I could tell he didn’t have much time. The call was straight to the point, just as I had expected.
He quickly let me know that he had arrived at basic training and was doing fine. Relief washed over me, even though the call was brief. He mentioned that in three weeks, he would be able to call again, and he also planned to write letters home. That was something to look forward to—handwritten letters, something tangible to hold onto during his absence.
The call lasted about a minute, but in that short span, I made sure to tell him how proud I was of him for embarking on this new chapter of his life. I reassured him that we loved him and would be thinking of him constantly. Then, just as suddenly as it began, the call was over.
It was a fleeting moment, but one filled with emotion. I knew my son had started a challenging journey, one that would shape his future. As a parent, it’s hard to let go, but I couldn’t have been prouder of the path he had chosen.
I’ll be counting down the days until his next call, but in the meantime, those words I said at the end of the conversation will carry me through: I’m proud of him, and I love him.
